Privacy Policy

RoadMate AU ("RoadMate", "we", "us") is a community app for Australian heavy-vehicle drivers to view and share the live status of NHVR (National Heavy Vehicle Regulator) inspection and compliance sites. It is available as a mobile app (iOS and Android) and a web app at roadmate.club. This policy explains what information the app handles and why.

RoadMate is designed to be low-friction and privacy-respecting: you do not need to create an account or provide your name, email address, or phone number to use the app.

Information we handle

• Anonymous device identity. When you open the app, we sign you in with Firebase Anonymous Authentication. This creates a random, device-based identifier (an anonymous user ID) that lets the app remember your favourites and attribute your contributions. It is not linked to your real-world identity, and we cannot use it to personally identify you.
• Optional Google sign-in. You can optionally sign in with Google, for example to keep your favourites and contributions across devices. If you do, we receive and store your Google account email address and basic profile details (name, profile photo) via Firebase Authentication. Signing in is never required. To delete this data, see Delete your account.
• Contributions you make. Status votes (Open / Blitz / Closed), activity reports (free text you type), and new sites you submit are stored in our database (Google Cloud Firestore) alongside your anonymous ID and a timestamp. Please do not include personal or sensitive information in free-text reports, as this content is shared with other users of the app.
• Favourites. Sites you star are stored against your anonymous ID so they sync back to you.
• Location. If you use the "Nearby" feature or the GPS speedometer / Trip Logger and grant location permission, the app reads your device's location — a single reading for "Nearby", or continuously while a trip is being tracked — to rank sites by distance, show your live speed, and measure a trip's distance and duration, all on your device. Your location is not sent to us or stored on our servers. Saved trips (start time, duration, distance, and top/average speed) are stored only on your device and can be deleted there. You can decline or revoke location permission at any time in your device settings; the rest of the app still works.
• Crash diagnostics (mobile apps). If the app crashes on iOS or Android, Firebase Crashlytics collects a crash report — the error and its stack trace, plus device information such as model, operating-system version, and app version — so we can diagnose and fix the problem. This is not collected on the web app.
• Usage analytics. We use Google Analytics on our website and Firebase Analytics in the iOS and Android apps to understand aggregate usage (for example, screens visited and general device and region information). On the web this may set cookies and collect standard technical data such as your IP address and browser type. See Google's practices below, and note that browser controls and "Do Not Track" settings can limit web analytics.

How we use this information

• To run the core service — showing live, community-sourced site status.
• To remember your favourites and attribute your contributions to your device.
• To moderate submissions (new sites are reviewed before appearing publicly).
• To understand aggregate usage and improve the app.

We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising. RoadMate contains no third-party ad networks.

Service providers

We use Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Hosting, and — on the mobile apps — Crashlytics crash reporting and Firebase Analytics) and Google Analytics to operate the app. Data is processed by Google on our behalf. Data sharing and retention

Your public contributions (votes, activity reports, and approved site submissions) are visible to other users of the app — that is the purpose of the service. We retain contributions for as long as they are useful to the community. We do not otherwise share your information except as needed to operate the app or where required by law.

Children

RoadMate is intended for heavy-vehicle drivers and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your choices

• Deny or revoke location permission at any time in your device settings.
• Use browser privacy controls to limit web analytics.
• Delete your account and associated data at any time — see roadmate.club/delete-account.html.
• Contact us to request removal of a specific contribution you have made. Because contributions are tied to an anonymous device ID, please include enough detail for us to locate the content.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "Last updated" date.
